DURRANT - Bucks - 18th & 19th cent
« on: Sunday 26 February 12 14:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

I'm interested in finding any information about the Durrant family who lived in north Bucks - very near the border wih Northamptonshire - Turweston, Bucks - Whitfield Northants and Brackley.

Any info on brickmaking in this area.

Also I would like to hear from anyone tracing Anne, Thomas or Edwin Durrant all born between 1840 and 1845 to Sarah and John Durrant.

Thanks

Nell

Hi Nell

Welcome to Rootschat.  :)  Sure you will find lots of people who will help.

In the meantime, do you have John & Sarah's marriage?

December 1/4 Bicester  - John Durrant = Sarah Groom.  Took place at Bucknell, but I don't have the exact date.
If you don't have it already, buying the certificate will be worthwhile.

Good luck

Watford/Rickmansworth - Payne, Paddick, Gurney, Green, Nichol(l)s
Hindringham/Norfolk - Sands, Southgate
Newbury, Berks. - Pocock, Salter
Sevenoaks area Kent - Nash, Wicking, White
Cranbrook area Kent - Hayward
Ash/Windlesham, Surrey - Chitty/Chittie, Harwood

The year was 1839 and both freebmd and the GRO index shows her surname as Broom

Hi - and thanks both for getting back to me.  I know about Sarah and their children.  I'm asking about this family first to see if there is anymore info about the descendants of theire children.  But that is not the real problem - Despite living with Sarah during the 1840's by the 1851 censu John Durrant has disappeared.  Sarah is listed as 'married' and 'head' of the family.  This also occurs in the 1861 census.

So what happened to John?  I've checked the deaths, I've checked the 1851 census but can't find any possibles.

In 1856 a brickmaker called John Durrant registers a child called Caroline Elizabeth in Abergavenny, Wales.  His wife is listed as 'Maria'.  Later census returns are interesting - particularly the 1871.  By this time John and Maria have produced many more children, including my Grt Grand mother, and are living in Macclesfield, Cheshire. (Brickmaking meant travelling around - following the work).  John states his birthplace as being 'Turweston, Bucks.

I am trying to find some proof - other than circumstantial - that John who married Sarah is  the same John that was with Maria.  I have, of course, checked all the baptisms for Turweston and surroundings and not found any other possibles.

Any further advice or info about any names that ring bells would be appreciated.

Thanks

Nell

Hi

She was Maria Rowe daughter of James and Sarah Rowe b circa 1835.  On census returns she states she was born in 'Luxulyan' but sometimes puts 'St Blazey'.  Maria continued to live in Macclesfield after John's death - 1874 and she married again - having the surname Cooper.

Thanks

Nell

There doesn't appear to be a Rowe/Durrant marriage on freebmd.  When did Sarah die and when did John die?

Did Maria "re-marry" as Rowe or as Durrant?

Did she show herself as a widow or spinster on that marriage cert

Hi - she re-married as durrant nee rowe and a widow.  Believe me the lack of marriage cert for john and maria has driven me up the wall!  John died in 1874 and sarah sometime after that.

Thanks

There is a more interesting 1861 entry for Carmarthen - he gives his birthplace as Harwich Ostend!!

Maria is Mary b St Blazey
