Well, I have seen some Spellers being deported to Australia and Van Diemans Land after being convicted in Bury St Edmunds, James and George being the ones I was most interested in.  But of course the details are so scant that the entries could refer to anyone of that name.  There were lots of Spellers around in Essex and some in Suffolk in that era.

But you do have a point.  It would have been difficult for someone to come back to England I suppose after serving a sentence across the world.  And to get a good job on the railway, well yes, I see what you mean.

It was just a thought on my part.

Thanks for your observations.

Hello Damien

thanks for your info.  Are you interested in the Spellers or just doing look ups?  I didn't have an occupation for Frederick.  So thanks for that.  Frederick's wife maud was born in St Pancras so probably that's why they married in London.  I couldn't find Fred in 1911 census but he died in WW1 anyway in 1917.  His father William remained in Thaxted.

Do you have anymore on the Spellers?

Many thanks,

Diana

Hi Diana -
Just a thought. If Edmund was working as an engine driver and living at Prittlewell in 1881, it seems likely that his employer would be the London, Tilbury & Southend Railway which was open then, while the line through Prittlewell didn't open until 1888/9.

The L.T.& S.R. was taken over by the Midland Railway in 1912.

HI Roger,

Well, I assumed that because the family lived in Station Yard, Prittlewell in 1861 and Edmund's father Frederick worked as a railway porter, then the station in Prittlewell was open by then?  Edmund was an engine driver in 1881.  And his brother George was an engine cleaner in Prittlewell.

Perhaps they worked in Southend then?

Regards

Diana

Diana -

Yes, I'd assume they worked at Southend on the LT&SR.

Prittlewell station (on the Great Eastern Railway) opened to passengers on 1st October 1889; the line through there had opened to goods traffic in 1888.

Difficult to understand "Station Yard, Prittlewell" in 1861!  Strange, but old maps might explain it.
