Slohabert, Kirkinner
« on: Wednesday 29 February 12 09:38 GMT (UK) »
I have found the baptism of my 2xggrandmother Margaret Craig in Kirkinner, Wigtownshire which states her father Thomas was a 'labourer in Slohabert'. Genuki says Slohabert is a hamlet in Kirkinner but other than that I can't find any other information. Does it still exit? I know perhaps I need a local detailed map..but google didn't come up with anything.

Can anyone help please? :)

Half  asleep this morning  :-\

I have now found a map on genuki with Slohabert( Sloehabbert) on it  ;D at least I now know where it is.

Would still love to hear from anyone who may have any info on/connections with the Craig family/Slohabert. Margaret's father Thomas lived at Sheep Park where his father (another Thomas )was a farmer according to 1841 census.

Hi Granny

Had a look for you and it is on the search engine sites.
It is a small hamlet one and a half miles from Kirkinnon.
It has 54 inhabitants.
If you want to search for any small villages or places, if
you put the name then Genuki after it you get a really
good site that brings up all the information from the past
with it and also nearby places so you can see how many
miles away alot of the places are.  It is well worth putting
on as you can also get church information, directories of
residents say in 1824 etc.  Not on every place but you might
end up lucky

regards Sandymc

p.s. glad you found genuki.  Your post just beat mine to it

Hi Sandymc,

Thank you for your reply. I am a bit out of my comfort zone in Scotland; most of my family are from Lancashire which I know quite well so I don't have to look places up 'cos I already know where they are.
Scotland unfortunately is totally new to me but is like a breath of fresh air :) I am rejuvinated and really want to plan a visit to my ancestors home turf :D

Thanks once again for taking the time to help

Hi GrannyM  :)

NLS has old maps -

http://geo.nls.uk/search/#zoom=6&lat=56.71138&lon=-4.9&layers=B000000FFFFFFTFFFFT

If you enter Kirkinner in the top box , then pan to the left(West) there is a Sheep Park

Hi , my family tree on my mothers side all came from slohabert but are on all the census as east slohabert , so went down there and found that it was only a farm but the cottages where sited east and west slohabert so I thought that the name only was for the farm not a village they were there from 1807 got more info if you would like  claycrop

Ev, thank you for the link. It really helps to see where they lived, beginning to build up a picture now.

Claycrop, any info at all would be great as I don't know this area at all. Had a feeling there wouldn't be much there in Slohabert with it being descibed as only a hamlet of Kirkinner on Genuki. Sounds very sweet though  :)

Many thanks
