« on: Thursday 01 March 12 18:04 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone tell me where there is or was a mill in Lenham please? I have an ancestor who was a miller there and it would be nice to know more about it.
Hope someone can help.

What an amazing site panda. Thank you for introducing me to it. I found mention of a smock mill in Lenham Heath immediately with a photo. It's not one of the more impressive mills in the catalogue. There may be more to be found but I shall have  to register for some of the information.

The first image I found was base only but looking further on the site there are many more images of the Lenham Heath mill as a complete structure in working order.
My ancestor John Cruttenden was decribed as a miller of Lenham at the time of his second marriage in 1795
Does anyone know if this was the only mill in Lenham.?

If you put windmills in Kent into Wikipedia it brings up a possible 3 mills in Lenham. Not much information on them but it will help you widen your search.

Thanks again. This was more useful information than you might think. As the other two were built in the 19th century it looks almost certain that the Lenham Heath mill pictured on the website is the one I'm looking for. It was built in the 1760s.

Hi Sputnik,

I live in Lenham Heath and have a view of the Mill from my bedroom window ! !   I have found two pictures on websites.  I have attached them for you - also a picture from my window ! !  (Can only attach 2 pics, will send 3rd separately).

Have you found out any more about the Mill ?  I would be interested to know if you have.

Thank you for your help with Lenham Heath Mill. It would be really good to have the mill image from your window. As a new member you need to have 3 posts to use the personal message system. Then it would be possible to exchange email addresses which would allow any size files to be sent. A response to this will give you your 3 posts.

As far as information about the mill is concerned I have very limited knowledge. It was a smock mill built in 1769, the earliest of Lenham's three mills and it outlasted the other two which were both destroyed by fire. It ceased to be used in the early 20th century and stood empty until it was dismantled in 1925. I have several old postcard images of the mill complete with sails but thats about it.If you come across any further information on the mill I would really love to hear about it.
