1945 Death off Whitley Bay
« on: Friday 02 March 12 16:38 GMT (UK) »
Please could someone direct me towards a Press report or Coroners Inquest details related to the Death of David Harris aged 18 in 1945 I understand the death was either a swimming or boating accident which occurred in June 1945 probably off or at Whitley Bay.
Thank You

Hi Norman,

If you're local, the Central Library in Newcastle have the Evening Chronicle on Microfilm which you could trawl through.  Failing that, you could email North Tyneside Libraries Local Studies dept.

Local.studies AT northtyneside.gov.uk

which apparently has the Whitley Seaside Chronicle from 1895-1950

As far as I know, they still do free lookups, so you could be lucky  ;D

Regards,

Trini.

Trini The sad Story have located two short newspaper articles from ‘The Whitley Bay Seaside Chronicle dated 6 and 13 July 1945 respectively. David Harris aged 17 of Swinburne Gardens, Monkseaton, an Apprentice Boat Builder, was in a canoe, with a friend,  Geoffrey Dorin aged 19, off the shore at Whitley Bay, a mile or so out, in rough seas, when the canoe overturned.  The incident was seen from shore, and a rescue attempt was made, but could not save David Harris.  The body was recovered at a later date, and an Inquest found a verdict of ‘Accidental Death’. Again thanks for your help Norman
