Marriae look-up, please!
« on: Saturday 03 March 12 20:19 GMT (UK) »
Moses Adolpus Bate(s) and Leah Blane (Blain, Blaine)

She is not on '71 census with her family but as a servant with Carter family in Girtford, Bedfordshire.

He is sometimes listed as "Moses" and others as "Adolphus"  He is on '71 census as a servant in Frampton on Severn for the Turner family.

Their first child was born in 1873, so would be sometime betwen '71 census and '73 birth

They immigrated to the US in late 1800's

I have both 1900 & 1910.... 1900 inKenmore Village, Erie, NY census says they were married in '71 & have been married 29 years. That was where I came up with the date range for the marriage search. I used '71-74... Maybe I should check 75, as well. As I said, their eldest.... husband's GGrandmother was born in '73.

Moses and the three kids came over on the Parisian 24 Jan 1883. I haven't been able to locate a record for Leah.

Presumably in England if they only emigrated in 1875.  Do you know which county she was born in?

Looks like immigration year of 1885 in 1900 was probably correct - they were still in England in 1881:

1881 Census - Lichfield Road, Barton under Needwood, Staffordshire

Moses A. Bates    37     Farm Labourer              b. Longney (?), Gloucestershire
Leah Bates           32    Charwoman                  b. Little ...... ,        "
Mary A. Bates       7                                         b. Burton on Trent, Staffs.
Ellen P. Bates        4                                        b. Cheltenham, Gloucestershire
William S. (?) Bates  3                                     b. Barton, Staffs.
plus a lodger and a visitor

Yes, she was born in England. Mary Ann Bates b. 6 Nov 1873, Burton on Trent

Ellen Pricilla Bates b. 1876
William T b. 1878
Frances 1884
also, a child unknown.... I believe that came from a census record that stated there had been 5 children born.

Moses, as I mentioned earlier, came across the Mary Ann, Ellen Pricilla and William T on the Parisian. I have not been able to locate when Leah came. It could be that she stayed back b/c of a recent or impending birth... I can't quite figure out why.

It is interesting..... she came over with her parents when she was about 10. Her husband came from Wales about 1888. Family tradition was, he came alone and worked his passage on a Schooner. Eldest son in photos is my husband's Grandfather.

Have looked on 3 different sites and it looks as if they never actually married - not in England anyway.

The 1900 census states they'd had 7 children, 4 still living.
