The earliest census that is any use to family historians is the 1841 - and that has limited value as I said earlier.

National registration for Births Marriages & Deaths only started (in England & Wales) in 1837, and it wasn't mandatory until many years after that.

Before 1837, you need to consult Parish registers for BMDs.  A few are online and some are available on CD from the relevant local Family History Society, but many are only available to view in local record offices.

If you happen to descend from the 'landed gentry' there are lots more records to consult - but most of us don't!

I've just remembered that in earlier censuses, Niece & Nephew were sometimes used for Grand daughter & Grand son.  So the 1851 details that I gave you earlier, probably mean that

Joseph Strong  Nephew  U  25  Farm Servant
Sarah Strong  Niece  U  22   House Servant
Mary Strong  Niece  U  20  House Servant
William Strong  Nephew  U  18  Farm labourer
Jonathan Strong  Nephew  U  11   Scholar
Ann Strong  Niece  9
Elizabeth Strong  Niece  6

are actually William & Mary's children (and Joseph Priestman's grandchildren)

Thomas Priestman looks to be Mary's illegitimate son

Jim
I happened across your research through Googling "Joseph PRIESTMAN".    George's Father - William - born in Greystoke in 1801 married Mary PRIESTMAN (b 1803). From what I can gather she had two illegitimate sons (I can't find a record of any previous marriage) Joseph and Thomas. William Strong (George's father) was my ggg grandfather. George did marry Fanny Keswick and sometime between 1851 and 1861 George moved from Cumberland to Leeds in Yorkshire. He worked for a while as a General Labourer then bought a shop selling cigarettes and smallgoods (what we'd call a delicatessen today). Among his children was another George who joined the Leeds Police force. There has been a lot of movement of the Strong family together with the Graham's (with whom we intermarried) from England to Canada and I believe some of then were classed among the early settlers around the North Battleford area of Saskatchwen. I have been looking into the family for three or four years so have quite some detail available on SOME branches. You are the first person I have come across (apart from a second cousin, once removed who lives in Honolulu who has been doing any research at all on the Strong family. :) :) :)
