Blackquarry School(Completed - Thank you.)
« on: Tuesday 06 March 12 04:32 GMT (UK) »
Could anyone please help me. ???

One of my wifes ancestors, Daniel Macarthur is recorded both in the census, and in the post office directories as being an English and Merchantile teacher at Blackquarry School, Glasgow

I have tried to find information on the internet, but it has not been very helpful. Plenty of hits for schools, and Blackquarry tends to get hits for alcohol sites. :P

Could anyone point me in the right direction please.

There is mention of a Blackquarry school in the Port Dundas area of Glasgow in this book
http://www.archive.org/stream/calendar18921893univuoft/calendar18921893univuoft_djvu.txt

Quote
Blackquarry School Bursary {Arts). — Founded in 1876 by the
Trustees of the Blackquarry School, Port Dundas, Glasgow. The
Police Board of Glasgow having acquired the school conipulsorily
under "The Glasgow Police Acts," the Trustees resolved to apply
the proceeds, after payment of all claims upon the institution, in
founding a Bursary in the University of Glasgow. The Bursary is
open to competition to Students in the Faculty of Arts on their first
entering the University, under the same regulations as those of the
competition Bursaries in the University, and is tenable for four
years, subject to the condition that the Bursar shall attend the
qualifying course for the Degree of M.A. Value, the annual income
of a sum of £420 (about £13).

Thanks for that Myrrdin.

The problem is that that is when he retired from the school. The first mention I can find which specificaly mentions Blackquarry School, in the Post Office directories is in 1855.

I realise, now :-[, that I should have said so in the original post. From the information in the directories, and also in the census for Daniel, the location is in Garscumbe Road. I cannot find this road on the maps, but Garscube Road. Whether they are the same I have no idea.

Again thanks for the help

Garscube Road starts in the Port Dundas area of Glasgow before meandering northwards.

The article quoted above refers to the closure of the school and the acquisition of the buildings in 1876 - given the establishment of the University Bursary the archivist at Glasgow University may have further information.

The 1857 map of the area has only one building at that end of Garsccube Road marked as a school and it is situated at the junction of Garscube Road and Possil Road (opposite St Georges Road in the modern map)

The 1857 map can be seen at the National Library of Scotland website at

Thanks for that Myrrdin.

I had not looked closely at the information you posted to realise that it refered to the closure of the school :o and I must apologise for that :-[

I have emailed the university to see if they have any information about the school, and where I might find further information if they do not.

Again Thank you

No problem there ..... the second reference I made re the map location appears to be confirmed by a photograph at the Mitchell Library which refers to the "Old Round Toll" and Blackquarry School ...
http://www.mitchelllibrary.org/virtualmitchell/image.php?i=14332&r=2&t=4&x=1  although dated long after the closure of the actual school.

Thanks for that Myrrdin.

Not a prepossesing building, but then one of my schools was not too flash.

Have recieved some information from Glasgow University, and they have directed me to Glasgowlife, so will shoot them an email and see what they can tell me.

Again, thanks for all your help.
