Aitchison, Renton
« on: Wednesday 07 March 12 09:24 GMT (UK) »

I am looking for the death of John Aitchison born Brierry hill Duns 1867.
Son of Helen Aitchison born 1844 Died 1918.

The only John Aitchison I could find born 1867, died at Edrom in 1913. The details on the death certificate are all wrong, so I now suspect that this might be the wrong John?

John is on the 1901 & 1911 census at Whitfield farm Ayton.

His wife Janet Collins Renton died 1935 at Abbey St. Bathan. She was a Widow by then.

At a loose end?? Any help much appreciated

Hi
Have you found John in the 71, 81, 91 and was he always Aitchison?  I have found that sometimes if they were illegitimate they could change their surname to their father if they knew him or to the mother's new husband?  Did he marry under Aitchison?

Yes Barbara he kept his mothers name and was brought up by his Grandparents Robert Aitchison & Elizabeth Dickson until he was old enough to get behind a plough.

He is on the Census reports. His Mum Helen actually took his real father
John Yourstoun too Court at Dunse in a paternal case and won her case.

John Aitchison is probably a result of the Bondager system of employment in Berwickshire?

On John Aitchison's wife's death certificate, it states widow of John Aitchison farm servant deceased.

On SP the only one who died in 1928 was 0 years.  It would be worth looking at that to see if the date matches to rule it out.

Thanks Barbara,

That is John Aitchison's birth & Opr on the site you mentioned.
I did not see his death? I wonder who put the info on the site??

My interest in John Aitchison is that he stayed with his mum Hellen Aitchison & Granny Elizabeth Aitchison at Lumsdaine Coldingham right up until he married Janet C Renton.

I have been in every Kirk yard in Berwickshire looking for him. I thought Ayton might have been the place since he lived there for 20 years at Whitefield Farm. Did'nt see him. Loads of Aitchisons in there !!
Thanks for your help

You have to be wary of trees people have put on ancestry.  That was Norma who said he is on that site, by the way, not me.  It is worth checking.  I would buy the 1928 one on Scotlandspeople (will only cost around £1.50) and see if it is him but it does have a 0 in the age column which usually means it is a child not yet one.  Who informed on his wife's death, was it a son or daughter and do you think she had moved to Abbey St Bathan to live with them after her husband died?

Yes, thanks Barbara,

Looks like his family were at Blakerstone , Abbey St. Bathan in the mid 1930's. His wife Janet C Renton died there in 1935. The informant was her daughter Elizabeth Dickson Aitchison.

I went to Ayton a fortnight ago and Abbey St bathan last weekend.
Thinking that there might have been gravestones there, but there was nothing.

Sometimes stones give snippets of information!

Thanks
