William Hills - born Lindfield approx. 1834 **COMPLETED**
« on: Sunday 15 May 05 23:54 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am on the hunt for a William Herbert Hills, who was born in Lindfield in approximately 1834. He is listed in 1901 as a 67 year old, so the odd year or two out either side could be expected.

If there is no birth details, is he listed on the Lindfield census for 1841 as a 7 year old which might show his parents, or possibly he may still have been living at home as a 17 year old in 1851.

What little I do know about him is that he was married to a Kate by 1901, but the only marriage between any William Hills and Kate at roughly the right time was in 1897, just a couple of years before the birth of his daughter Grace. His older children Charlotte and my Great-grandfather George were born several years earlier, so I think that Kate may have been his second wife. I'll need to order a birth certificate for George when I can be sure of his full details

Many thanks for any information which could lead me to find more of this previously unknown (by anyone alive today, that is!) line of the Hills family.

Glen

I have spotted a William Hill (not sure about the 'H' though) in 1841 Lindfield, and he is 14.  Living with Henry, 50, and George, 20.  There is a Thomas Hill, 20, living at a separate address.  Most of the Lindfield pages on my discs are extremely difficult (and in many cases, impossible) to read.  Sorry.

Wow, thats a lot of information to collate and organise. Thanks to you all

A couple of questions though. In 1871, there are two heads of the household at 24 New England Street, both called William H Hills. Why would this be? Is it likely that there are two seperate apartments in the property, one headed by the elder William, one by the younger? I would assume that there must have been some unusual arrangement, otherwise the people would have been listed as son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren.

Also, I will now be left dangling on tenterhooks until I get the birth certificate of my great-grandfather George William Hills, because Ellen would be too old to be his mother and the mother of at least a few of his siblings, but his father didn't get married to his wife Kate until at least five years after the birth of George's sister, and three years after Georges birth, so I wonder if there may have been a third Mrs Hills in between.

Whatever, it seems that William was a bit of a randy old goat!! (Hope that genetic trait has been passed on!!!)  ;D

Hi Glen

With regards to the 1871 census the "/" signifies the end of a household so they were listed as two separate households/families living in the same property.  Your guess is as good as ours as to what the arrangement actually was.

I have noticed that he has a daughter Charlotte age 11 in 1901- assuming her age is correct, she wasn't there in 1891 so who did she belong to?  Could she, and perhaps William, belong to Kate and not him? No doubt you'll solve it!

Best wishes
