Please date and restore
« on: Wednesday 07 March 12 14:53 GMT (UK) »
This is a photograph of my 2xgreat grandmother Matilda Lucas (the same lady as in my profile picture). Unfortunately I don't have a scan of the whole card and the image comes from a family photo album. Matilda was born in 1846.

Many thanks
- Lucia

Hi

I would say that this picture was taken before 1861 when Prince Albert died.
Most woman after that wore black dresses, like Queen Victoria.

Just seen Genechasers post. Some women wore mourning attire for the 1st. year after the Queen died, some of those close to her ( ladies of the Court ) wore mourning attire after Albert died again for a limited time.
1850's/60's women looked completely different to this in hair & dress.
When did Matilda die as this looks like a mourning card.

Agree with Jim, this is definitely 1870s.

We haven't seen too many ladies wearing identifiable mourning on this board. So even if ladies did wear black in support of the Queen after Albert died, they don't show up here even though dark colours can look black in a sepia photo. Most clothing in photos posted here aren't that dark.

So I would also agree with Jim that although some women wore black like the Queen, it wasn't most.

Cheers,

I hadn't thought about mourning clothes so it's interesting to know about that fact. In answer to your question, she died on 29th September 1915 and was married in 1872. I actually do have a photograph of her in what I believe to be mourning clothes and in which she appears very old. The picture I posted is from a family photograph album (see below for the full page). I know the photograph is slotted in so I'll have to look at the back of the photo when I'm next at home.

If you post any more photos it's important to remove them from the album page before scanning...we need to see the whole thing. What Jim thought might be a mourning card was actually the surround from the page...it fooled him, and Jim isn't easily misled like that :)
