'Fernleigh' 11 Whitehorse Road, Croydon 1944
« on: Thursday 08 March 12 03:07 GMT (UK) »
Can someone please help me with finding out who lived in this house in 1944? I have a photo of my grandfather and his wife taken there at Christmas 1944 - and if I can find out who lived there, it would help my research, I think.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Regards

Jan, an electoral roll for near that date should tell you.
There is one problem and that is that I think I am correct in saying that during the war electoral rolls were not kept up to date.  If I am wrong on that someone will correct me :)

So you may have to go to the rolls closest to that year- before and after the war.

I don't know where back dated rolls are held but it might be worth asking the Library nearest there if they hold them

Thank you Charlotte
Yes I think 1945 would have the answer or before the war, because whoever lived there had been there for a while (the 2 photo's I have of my grandfather are a few years apart from looking)
My problem is that I am in Australia - so I am hoping the sks could perhaps do a lookup for me.
I had a look on www.croydononline.org but couldn't find where to contact them.

As well as sks appearing, there is a Surrey History centre- I thinkthat is the nmae, whoI found tobe very helpful when emailed.
Youmight need to g**gle search for the place-it is large and relatively new.

Have a go and let us know how you get on ;D

Contact Croydon Local Studies, see end of http://www.croydon.gov.uk/leisure/archives/lslibrary who have ERs and directories, though as Charlotte says, maybe not for wartime.

Unfortunately, you timed this message one day too late, as I was at Croydon just yesterday  :(. I wasn't planning to go back for a while, but if there's a problem, send me a PM and I'll try.
Researching Penge, Anerley, (incuding the Crystal Palace) and neighbouring parts of Beckenham, currently in London (Bromley), formerly Surrey and/or Kent.

Thanks Charlotte, will try it and let you know.

Thanks for replying Chris - I will try that also. That is actually where I got the address from back in  1998 but it got a bit overlooked. (self should enter info somewhere at the time of recieving!!)

My grandfather was one Charles Warren - and I got an email from a lady whose grandfather was Charles brother in law, telling me she always knew him as Uncle Bunny!!
