A family Mystery
« on: Thursday 08 March 12 16:52 GMT (UK) »
My great grandmother, was Martha Bishop, born in 1874 in Biddestone Wiltshire. She married Francis Godwin had my Grandfather, Sidney Godwin in 1905.
After this, she disappears. We were told that she died in childbirth, but there is no record of a child, or even her death. I have searched and searched with her maiden name and her married name and now I really dont know where else to try. Surely people just dont disappear. We even wondered at one time if she left and the story was made up that she died, but theres no record of her anywhere after 1905, its a real mystery.
Can anyone help me to put this mystery to bed and my great grandmother to rest? Thanks so much in advance..

re the 1917 death, there is a Martha E(llis) Godwin on the 1911 Census that would fit this death registration- and she is not married to a Francis Henry nor is there a Sidney in the household.

What checking have you done of the 1911 Census?
Have you found Francis and checked his marriage status/no of children born - he is there (but minus Martha and the children)? Cannot provide details - (Rootschat policy/copyright issues).

On the 1901 Census there is a daughter, Elsie, aged 1. Have you searched for Elsie in 1911?. Have you searched for Sidney in 1911?

There are possibles - note possibles.

regards

Thank you.  My Granddad was put in a childrens home so he is not with his father and sister in 1911
I found him in a childrens home in Bath.. Thanks for the marriage details. :) What happened to his mother however is a mystery. The 1911 Cencus has a Martha Godwin in Bristol but its a different one.
Its like she went poof! and disappeared! :o

I felt it was Sidney in the home in 1911. Also feel it might be his elder sister Elsie in the other home in 1911 - in spite of her "place of birth".

Francis' description of his marital status in 1911 is interesting - but of Martha, nowt!

best of luck and regards

In the 1911 Census inmates of Asylums were only shown by initials. There is one MG of approx. the right age, but she is shown as single.
