COMPLETED - THORNTON - ULGHAM PARISH REGISTERS
« on: Saturday 10 March 12 09:07 GMT (UK) »
I am in need of help in tracing my 3 x GGrandmother - Elizabeth (surname unknown).

Robert Thornton and Elizabeth had seven children baptised in Ulgham between 1820 and 1832.

I find Robert born 1796 in Longhorsley) and Elizabeth in the 1841 census living in Widdrington.  By 1851 Robert is a widower still living in Widdrington.

I have never found a marriage for Robert and Elizabeth nor do I find a death for an Elizabeth Thornton in the Widdrington area.

It may be that they never married.  If anyone has access to the parish register images for the children's baptisms I would be glad of a look up to see if a surname is shown for Elizabeth.

Any help in knocking down this brick wall very much appreciated.

Hi Vivian,
I was going to suggest getting the Birth Cert of Isabel c 1843, described as Roberts Daughter on the 1851 Census.
This would have given you Elizabeths Maiden Name.
Unfortunately I found her Christening and she is the Illeg. Daug of Elizabeth.

Although the 1841 has Elizabeth born in County this may not be accurate.

Have you got Roberts Christening?
There is a Robert THIRNTON Baptised 17 July 1796, St Helen, Longhorsley, Father JOHN, Abode Garrett Lee.

Sorry I cant find a Marriage in Northumber either.
Hopefully someone else can for you.
And also access the Baptisms.

Trish :)

Hi Trish

Thanks for your help in looking at this.

I have been looking for Elizabeth for some little while and until I find out who she is this line has come to a dead stop.

The Robert baptised on July 17th 1796 is the husband(?) of Elizabeth.

Best wishes.

Hi Vivian,

I see from the other post that Ulgham records did not give mother's maiden name so another tack is needed.

Which parishes have you looked in for the marriage?

Christine

Hi Christine

I have done a 'general sweep' on Family Search of Northumberland marriages but found nothing for Robert and Elizabeth.

If we follow the naming patterns of the day it is possible that Elizabeth's mother is Jane (the name of their first daughter born 1820) but there are just too many Elizabeth's with mother Jane to try and track her down this way.

You will see from my initial post I could not find the death of Elizabeth, which suggested perhaps they never married, but this seems a bit unusual considering they had seven children.  If the 1841 census is to be believed Elizabeth was born c1800 in Northumberland (Robert 1796) - both quite young for a possible obstacle of either of them being already married to someone else to prevent them marrying.

Best wishes.

Vivian

Obviously not all parishes are on line so they could still be lurking somewhere.  I'm wondering whether Robert was still living in Longhorsley when he married - there could be marriage banns.  I'll have a look on Wednesday - see if any exist.

Hi Christine

Your offer to look to see if banns exist is very kind - thank you so much.

Robert's baptism in Longhorsely in 1796 shows his father as John, although I have never found a John in the few marriages I have noted in Longhorsely, nor have I found any other baptisms with father John.  This may suggest that the family were not resident in Longhorsely except for the birth of Robert and it is very possible that he was not living there when he married.

I am very grateful for the time you are spending on this.

Best wishes.
