Hi Charlotte,
I have led you round in a circle with henry I think, used the 1861 to put his birth at 1809-1810, found a henry on family search born then---bu familysearch used the census info to create his birth.

maybe sharon with her greater experience could look at our posts on the hereford resources board and give us her thoughts.

Is henry's age consistent on the censuses?

Mike,
I have Henry born in Dorstone. The 3 census records I have with him married to Elizabeth  have him born 1811, 1811, 1809.

After reviewing this Henry, it looks highly likely that he is the son of Henry & Ester Gwynn

His mother-in-law's name was Mary & wife was Elizabeth... and it would appear, his mother was Ester.

His siblings were Jehu, Lucy, Ann, Richard, Ester, Elizabeth.
There may have been more siblings, yet this is all I have found

It would be consistant, as his children's names gathered from records were: Elizabeth, Henry, Mary, Lucy, Esther & Ann

Oh, and I DID find a 1851 census with two of the sisters together on it... and one was born in Peterchurch, while the other was born in Dorstone.

Your thoughts, All????

Hi again,

I found this from the England & wales National Probate Calendar

" 28 January The will of Henry Sykes late of Llanbedr in the County of Brecon deceased who died 11/12/1868 at Henbant aforesaid was proved at Hereford by the oath of Evan Powell of Gwrlode in the parish aforesaid farmer the sole executor".
Effects under 800 pounds.

You might consider finding that will.

It might be a coincidence as the names are so common for these areas but on the census returns for Henry & Elizabeth in Wales the are also Powell & Lewis family members on the same or next pages of the census returns
& for Ester in Hereford there is a Powell family living nearby.

Thank you, Sharon!

I found the information you mentioned on ancestry, so have have a form ready and in the envelope set to mail to Probate Registry for Henry. I will go on Monday to the bank to get an International Money order to go with it.

I had the same for Elizabeth in 1880. I have a question. If Henry had enough money/property for a will... wouldn't his widow? I can't find anything for her.

I sent for his daughter (Elizabeth) & John Watkins marriage cert. in Llantillo Crosseney. Parish records transcript mentions Henry as father of Elizabeth but none for John. Their first few children were born there (Can find #2 on transcript but not #1) before they all (Sykes & Watkins families) moved on to Llanbedr & lived next door for a while. Henry & wife stayed there  - daughter, Elizabeth & family moved on to Llangenney.

Have a question #2... is there a town called Llanvino or something similar near to Dorstone & Peterchurch??

My brain is on overload!  :o

Llanveynoe is phoenetically the same, it is a parish about 2 miles northeast of longtown and clodock and 4 miles west of dorstone and peterchurch.
It is a church and 3 houses but there are a few outlying farms in the parish.

Changing the subject I have a book of old Hereford maps, one map is titled
"A survey of the estate in the parish of Clodock 'Neuadd Lwydd' belonging to
John Lewis Esq   year 1794    the name lewis rings a bell with me

Very interesting, Mike. I was wondering about Llanveynoe... b/c Elizabeth Sykes Watkins (Daughter of Elizabeth "Lewis" Sykes)

has her birth place as Llanvino on all census records but the last one

She was married in Llantillo Crosseney & lived for one census... moved to Llanbedr... and then on to Llangenney.

It is only on the last census before she died in 1901, it says she was born in Llanbedr. (maybe her son gave the info??)

So, parents were born/lived in/ Dorston & Clodock area and she has Llanvino (Llanveynoe)... and it is all in the same area. Pieces are fitting a bit better.

Would LOVE to see/read your book. Let me know if you find any interesting "Lewis" facts! Maybe a good coat tail for the family to hold on to! Is always nice to have an interesting fact of history to add to the mix!
