Hi Dalty, I was trying to contact a member of your family a couple of years ago.My Late great uncle took part in the capture of the British Armoured Car that Charlie planned, They where also in the army around the same time, I have a copy of a letter here looking for the transfer of my great uncle by request of Col Dalton, they later worked in the Sweepstakes together, I had a couple of funeral notices that both men attended etc.

Hi Gary, it's a smallish world, no? Charlie's role in the capture of the armoured car was documented in his book "With the Dublin Brigade". Of course, one is getting only a snapshot precis of the whole escapade, but what comes across is the daring nature of the whole plan (Collins thought it up, of course). Charlie was lookout. Emmet was the one who dressed up in British Army officer uniform (his own, no doubt) and rode with others into Mountjoy to try and spring Sean McEoin (unsuccessfully, as it turned out).

Would love to see a scan of the letter you have!

Chris

Hi Chris I am delighted to be in touch.Emmet & Joe Leonard where dressed in Emmets uniforms, Rumour has it that there battalion badges gave them away, as that battalion was not in Dublin at that time.My pc packed in last week so I lost everything all my scans, I am using an old one at the moment but I may have a copy of that letter in my out box of my email account ! When I went to see my great uncles file in the army archives there was a note on the cover from your grandfather !  Gary

Very interesting programme
I would have preferred three individual shows as the jumping back and forth I can find off putting but the content and delivery made a viewable programme

it did jump from story to story a little too much for me also - broke things up a little. That said, interesting stories..

is it a series ?

There's a program next week called 'A Lost Son' at the same time about the death of Michael McDowell's uncle Brian MacNeill, also during the civil war.
