Elizabeth Ann John(s) 1871 census
« on: Monday 16 May 05 10:45 BST (UK) »

One of my greatgrandmothers was called Elizabeth Ann John(s) and was born in Neath in 1851.  She married Walter Hill born c1849 Kerry, Ireland, in the parish church, Neath on the 26 September 1870.

I would love to find out more about her family in Wales.  Her father was called David John(s) and was a collier at the time of Elizabeth's marriage.

Elizabeth and Walter moved to Ponsanooth, Cornwall about 1880.  Their children who were born in Wales are:
Mary Ann Hill b. 1871 Neath
Elizabeth Hill b. 1874 Neath
Hannah Marie Hill b. 1875 Neath
Louisa Jane Hill b.Averavon
Emily Margaret Hill b 1879 Neath

I wonder if anyone can find Elizabeth and Walter in the 1871 census, and I would love information on her father, David, and her brothers and sisters.

Many thanks in anticipation.

Patricia

Sorry, I looked through 1871 on Ancestry, but no luck.  I don't think the '71 is complete on Ancestry - although I could be wrong.
If I'm right perhaps someone with access to the complete census will be able to find them for you.

Sorry again I couldn't help

Many thanks for your help Sandie.  I also subscribe to Ancestry and they make a lot of mistakes. I've looked for certain members of my tree in the normal way, nothing there.  Then I've looked for someone else and discovered that they were on the census but that Ancestry missed them off!!  I know it's difficult with names of places, especially here in Cornwall, but some of the spellings is so off that if you put in their birth place with the normal spelling, it would never be found. I've had one family called Lidyez when it was clearly written Lidgey. I could go on and on.

Sorry about the whinging.

You're probably right about the 1871 not being fully transcribed, and I think I will have to ask someone to look it up.

Kindest regards

Patricia
