CHARLES & ESTHER HALL - NEW YORK
« on: Sunday 11 March 12 20:42 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for any information on Charles & Esther Hall. Charles Hall (b. April 1887 Coolnahinch, Kenagh, Longford) emigrated from Longford, Ireland to New York in April 1913. He married Esther (unknown maiden name, born in Finland c. 1899). They had three children (according to the 1930 census) - Charles, John and Frances. The latest information I have on them is 1942 when Charles Hall (father) registered for WW2. At that time they were living on 82nd Street, NY. Can anyone help please? Thanks.

The home address on the WWII Draft Registration Card is 3 Sylvan Court.  Charles was employed at 14 E. 82nd St.

Hi Las2012,

Drawn a blank so far. Neither the date on the WW2 draft 26 th April 1887 or the date on the Canadian Attestation Papers for Charles Hall - 23 rd April 1888 show up on the SSDI.  This may indicate Charles had died before 1962 when the SSDI was fully up and running  ???

HI Las2012,

SSDI = Social Security Death Index.

This may be of onterest to you - the employer on the WW2 draft was Mrs C J Stralem.
Some background on that family:-

My goodness! Thanks for the link! Any idea if these families kept records of staff. My great uncle's profession was butler.

Looking at the passenger lists for 1914 which is the year Esther states she immigrated, there is a passenger list for Esther Jarvmen born 1899 Ricoven. Finland who arrived in New York on the Hellig Olav.
Also travelling was another female who is transcribed as Impi Jarvmen. Both had a mother Aili Jarvmen, "Rubba", Ruovesc or R*iovisc  ??? Can't read who and to which address they were going - but something like Lauara Jubkansen - 021 - 56 th Street **** New York.

Also found a marriage record for Impi (surname is Jarvinen) to John Gussisburg - October 1918 in Manhattan.

Esther Jarvinen aged 22 years Born Tammerfors. Finland travelled Hamilton to Bermusa, arriving 24 th March 1921 on the Fort Victoria. Going to 53 W 130 Street. New York. (so pretty close to the address for Charles and Esther Hall)

If this is correct, it also gives a time frame for the marriage between 24 th March 1921 and 15th August 1921)
It was also quite common for hired servants to go to Bermuda, the second homes or holiday destinations of there employers.

Esther Hall born Rouosi  ??? Finland travelled from Hamilton Bermuda to New York. arriving 15 th August 1921 on the Fort Hamilton. Charles also travelled, was described as a waiter. Residence 53 W113 Street. New York.

On the WW1 Draft for Charles Hall. Born 23 April 1888 Coolnahich. Kenagh Co Longford. Ireland. Residing Tuxedo Park. Orange. NY
Employed by Henry M Tilford. (Believe this to be Henry Morgan Tilford)
Dated June 5 th 1917
Charles was medium height, slender build, blue eyes and brown hair. No distinguishing marks.

Charloes and Esther could have both worked for this gentleman before going to Mrs Stralem  ???

Mention of Henry Morgan Tilford

Shelly could probably give you a better background to the addresses they lived at and there employers.
