Might be going off on a completely wrong tangent here, but :

Christening, 9th October 1774
Joshua Smith
Father's name : Jonathan Smith
Great Ayton, Yorkshire

I wonder if Jonathan is Benjamin's grandfather ....

North Riding of Yorkshire

Burial Date : 28th September 1856

Place of burial - St Hilda's, Egton
North Riding of Yorkshire

If they adhered to the British naming pattern and Benjamin named his first born son John, after his father's father - could this John be his father :

Christening : 22nd December 1771
John Smith
Father's name : Jonathan Smith
Great Ayton, Yorkshire

Ignore my theory on the naming pattern, I've just found this baptism in Goatland :

Christening: 23rd July 1820
William Smith
Parents : Benjamin and Sarah
Goathland, Yorkshire

If Benjamin and Sarah Sleightholm married on the 1st January 1820 and Sarah was from Goathland, the above William might possibly be their oldest child.

It was a nice thought for as long as it lasted, but I still think there's a possibilty that John Smith born 1771 could either be Benjamin's father, or another uncle.

It's all food for thought, anyway ! :)

I'd fully intended to leave it there, but then I found this. It was the occupation that drew me to it.
According to the attestation paper's it's the same as Joshua's.

1841 census :
HO107/1256/21, Folio: 6; Page: 9

Yorkshire, Aislaby
White Row

Jonathan Smith, 76, Tailor
Elizabeth, 78

Both born in county.

~~~~~~~~~~
Jonathan Smith
Birth date: 24th September 1765
Father's name:   Jonathan Smith
Goodness...it's all over the place isn't it? You've gone above and beyond Pels. There's certainly some food for thought there. I've made contact with a Genes site in Whitby and they have lots of records from 1600 or so up to 1837 which I'll now investigate as well.
Thank you to one and all for the assistance.....and the speed in which it came.
