1871 Census Porlock
« on: Monday 16 May 05 11:13 BST (UK) »
Please could someone look at the 1871 census for Porlock to see if Mary HUISH, widow age 81, born in Porlock, is there. In 1861 she was in Parsons Street, Porlock with her husband Thomas, but I think he died in 1870 and 'Mary Huish' was the informant on the death certificate, but no relationship is given. I am trying to narrow down when Mary might have died since this was not an uncommon name in that area and there is more than one possible death in the indexes.

Many Thanks
Ceci

Hi Ceci,

I have looked at the 1861, the only Mary Huish who fits in age wise (born 1793) and is widowed was born in Wells Somerset and is now living with her daughters family.

Did your Mary have a daughter named Mary B Huish who married a Richard James?  If so then this is your Mary, if not then I'm araid I can't find her.  All the other Mary Huish's are far too young and still married.

Let me know and I can send you the rest of the details if this fits.

Happy Hunting

Thank you for looking for me. Was this the 1861 or 1871 census you looked in?

I don't think the Mary you found is mine. She did have a daughter Mary, but her married name was PRESS and later on BROOME and I have her in 1871 in Norfolk.

If this was from the 1871 census, then maybe I should pursue a possible death for her in the indexes in Jun 1861.

Many Thanks

Yes it was the 1871 census.  Do you want me to check the 1861 too?

Hi,

I have a Mary Marley b.1789 Porlock who wed Thomas Huish at Porlock in 1809. Thomas, bc.1781, d.1870, buried Porlock 20 Mar 1870. However, I also have that Mary died *before* Thomas, and was buried, at Porlock, 16 Jun 1861!

Their 10 children were all born Porlock between 1809 & 1834. Thomas was s/o Thomas 1745-1829 and Jane (nee Perkin) b.1744, who wed 16 May 1774 at Porlock.

HTH,
Jenny

Hi Jenny,

Thank you so much for your post. I now have the burial details for Thomas and Mary Huish and information on their 10 children.

I also have information on several other Huish from Porlock although I haven't been able to link them to my ancestors. I haven't been able to find a baptism for Thomas c. 1781, although I do have baptisms for children of Thomas & Jane. I think that my Thomas may have been baptised elsewhere to different parents.

I will send you a personal message as I suspect we may be related.

Best regards,
Ceci

Third attempt The Huish family connects to the Stewarts' of Norfolk County
England. I wanted to post a message but my files are too long. I have the
Stewats of England traced back to Scotland. I have 32,000 people in my files.
I have a lot of England Stewarts' worked out. Such as Augustine Stywarde, that
came to America 1611/12. The Pateshull Stewards', Nicholas Steward, my genealogy starts with Walter Stewart,1st Steward of Scotland, and works all
branches downward. I think I am in a position to write the truth about the
Stewarts'... Spellings such as Stewart, Steward, Stiward, Stywarde, Styward,
Stuard, Stuart, as well as other spellings has been the key. Also Esquire, is a term to indicate a Royal linage with a coat of arms, and the younger brothers
may be addressed as gentleman. I have made two files, one on Stewart, and the other on Huish and both are too large to post. The Huish family wrote a book on the Stuart family of London, which is my family. If I can be of help to other researchers email me at
Best Wishes,
Richard
