The alternative is to go "old school", as the younger brigade call it. Try using different notebooks or folders for the different branches you research. That way, you can have a pile of notebooks next to your computer, and put your notes into the relevant one as you come across data.
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

The notebooks are a good idea.  I keep a ring binder by my computer and have separate pages for the different surnames.  I also have a piece of paper clipped to the front so I can jot down miscellaneous bits of information.   :)

Many thanks for another excellent idea.

I THINK I have managed to resolve the situation with cut/copy/paste with word.

So fingers crossed. However yesterday I spent about two hours following a RED Herring, guess this happens a lot. Still enjoying it.

Don't worry about the red herring. You'll find more of them than at the fish market!

Ha Ha Ha

Very good.

Still the "finds" more than make up for the disappointments
