Emigration from Somerset.Charles & Susanah (nee DARBY) CAVE
« on: Sunday 18 March 12 21:45 GMT (UK) »
Please can anyone help me ???
I am looking for the ship and date my family came to australia.

Charles, Susanah and 9 of his 10 surviving children emigrated to South Australia in late1848 or early 1849. The last on followed in 1849.
He was a yoeman farmer at "The Priory Farm"in Stoke-sub-Hamden, Somerset...Charles Cave Esq.
There seems to be no record in australia about his emigration (I have had searches done by the Nat library of aust and state library of SA, as well as doing my own search of passenger records.
State library seems to think that as he was a gentleman of means the family came here privately, unassisted.
Are there any records/registers in England/Somerset which would cover this emigration?

Could you give us his full name please ??? We have what I think his her maiden name but what was his the Surname?

Did they have any children born here and do you have some proof as to when he actually came out with his family? Also was her first name spelt Susanah or Susannah?

Thanks Neil

Can't help with your query but couldn't help remarking on the co-incidence - my niece has a house next to that farm at Stoke sub Hamdon; i think her house is actually part of the stable area of the farm.  There are some nice old houses around there and the countryside is lovely.

This is off-topic too - but interesting and could possibly be related to your family - a grandson?

In 1931 an Australian man Charles Cave who is living in Somerset loses his memory when visiting Perth, Scotland and is identified by his wife (Ada Day) from his tattoos.

Thankyou all.... :)
Firstly
the Charles Cave in Perth is no relation, I have encountered him in my search several times.

Ros, the house in Somerset blew my mind when i saw it the first time, just lovely!

I do have the obit, and the names are
Charles Cave (I do not know of a second name)
Susanah Darby (Susan on the gravestone)

Muss, I do not know if this is my Charles cave, there were quite a few but his son William Rendall Cave-Kendall on cert, was appointed co-liquidator of the Commercial Marine insurance Co in Aust in 1884.

I do have Charles death cert 1850 and the State Library in Adelaide provided information on a search to say he was a farmer at sturt here at that time.

Several references allude to them travelling in 1848/9. His son John Darby Cave travelled here on board the "Appleton" (2 mast brig) arriving 21 June 1849 just prior to his sister, Mary being married here.
