I am researching my mums family tree KNOWLES they came from sussex my mums had a sister Kathleen and 2 brothers Frank and Arthur, my great great grandparents are Henry Knowles 1832 - 1914 and Elizabeth Ockenden 1836 - 1902, they married on 31 december 1853,  any help or advise on where to look as I am led to believe most of the family have passes except for an adopted son in 1946.,

Hi and welcome
You could start by looking at the 1881 census which is free on various sites.   www.freebmd.org.uk will be a good place to look for birth, marriage and death records.   Sussex is a very large county so you need to narrow the search a bit.  The marriage in 1853 took place in the Thakeham registration district so that is a start.

Andrea

there are four children in freebmd with surname Knowles, mmn Baldwin in district Petersfield from 1912.   (mother's maiden name only shows after 1911) and they have daughters Ellen and Bertha in the last census free search.

Genes Reunited copy of the 1881 census index tells you:
Henry Knowles birth:1832 Washington, Sussex, was still in Thakeham, Washington, Sussex, in 1881.
With him was his spouse Elizabeth Knowles and what appears to be 9 children:  The children's birth years range from 1854 - 1878.
Knowles    James    1854    Thakeham    Thakeham, Washington
Knowles    William   1856    Washington    Thakeham, Washington
Knowles    Annie    1865    Washington    Thakeham, Washington
Knowles    Albert    1867    Washington    Thakeham, Washington
Knowles    Walter    1870    Washington    Thakeham, Washington
Knowles    Jane       1872    Washington    Thakeham, Washington
Knowles    Allen      1874    Washington    Thakeham, Washington
Knowles    Laben    1876    Washington    Thakeham, Washington       Knowles    Edmund    1878    Washington    Thakeham, Washington
The unusual one is 'Laben (birth registered as Laban)' Knowles born 1876.  Laben can act as a good guide to finding some members of the family in subsequent censuses.

Family still in Washington in 1891 and had added a further son Ernest late 1881
1901 Some (not all) of the family in Storrington, Henry may now be a widower.
1911 Family now all gone their separate ways, Henry may have died (1901-1911).
