My grandfather and the RAMC
« on: Wednesday 21 March 12 05:52 GMT (UK) »
Hi I wonder if anyone can help me. I can't find my grandfathers service number any where. This is what I do know:
His name was Leslie Baker
D.O.B 11/11/1919
He lives in solford-greater Manchester
During his time with RAMC he was attached to the LRDG in Africa, spent time with General Teeto in Yugoslavia.
He was involved in removing the wounded from I assume a hospital ship at Victoria Dock in Liverpool, where he met a female ambulance M Yarrow who he later married in November 1946.
Can anyone help please he died in 1974 and my grandmother will not tell me any thing
Many thanks in advance Dawn H

Hi Dawn
I think you have enough information to apply for his service record from the MOD under the Freedom Of Information Act .It will cost £30 and expect a wait of a few months. You will have to supply proof he is deceased.
However if you can convince your Gran to apply they are Free to Next Of Kin.

It should be an interesting read sounds like he was attached to one of the first Special Forces units formed.

Providence Their Guide is a good book to read about LRDG.

Good luck

Hi Dawn

Are you sure your grandfather was RAMC  and not RE.

The only Leslie Baker I could find with the LRDG was from the link below.

http://www.hut-six.co.uk/WW2data/WO373-75-U.html

from the London Gazette

http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/37386/supplements/6070

No. 2124822 Sergeant (acting) Leslie BAKER, Corps
of Royal Engineers (Solihull).

Hi I'm positive that he was in the RAMC as I know that he wanted to join the Royal Lancs, but was deemed unfit because of the poverty in Manchester in the 30's.But as he had been a member of the Saint Johns Ambulance he deiced to put his medical knowledge to use.
My grandmother and grandfather had a bitter divorce and she will not talk about him her age doesn't help matters either.
Thank you
