Frank Ayres
« on: Friday 23 March 12 21:08 GMT (UK) »
I have found the record of Frank Ayres who I believe to be my Great Uncle on the passenger list of the SS Ruapehu. It sailed from London to Wellington on 18 Feb 1909.
Can anyone advise me where to start looking to trace him. At the time he was single man aged abt 27 and he may have joined the military as he had previously served in the British army for 8 Years.

Any help much appreciated, Andy.

Hi Andy, and welcome to the New Zealand Board.

His name doesn't appear on Archway, the search engine of Archives New Zealand.
http://archway.archives.govt.nz/

Are you able to provide any more information about him such as date and place of birth, occupation, marriage, etc.?

There are some Frank Ayres in Electoral rolls, some have middle names, some none

Have you looked at the shipping image, does it give an occupation or where he is from?
Bye

Hi Spades and Althea,
After going back and checking the passenger list I think I might have added 2&2 and made 5. On the list it states F.Ayres not Frank. I must have assumed it was Frank as everything else fits. He is listed as English,  travelling alone and a labourer but no address.
He was born at Charlbury, Oxon in 1882 and enlisted in the army in 1900 and served 8 yrs in S. Africa and India. After discharge he applied to go to New Zealand but as he was on reserve he had to get permission from the army.It was a copy of this application plus the fact that I cannot find any marriage or death records that made me think he went to NZ.
The only time he appears on census is 1991 aged 9 living with his g.parents in Gloucestershire.

Cheers, Andy.

Hi andy,

Are you able to provide the URL for the passenger list if it's on-line?

Have you considered British Army personnel records. If he was on reserve the file might show where he went and might record his death or other information.

Hi Spades,

the passenger list:

http://www.findmypast.co.uk/passengerListShowTranscript.action?uvn=626000064&vsn=49&_zga_s=1

WW1 pension records:

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=britisharmy&h=36212&ti=5538&indiv=try&gss=pt&ssrc=pt_t22504501_p1249475118_kpidz0q3d1249475118z0q26pgz0q3d32768z0q26pgPLz0q3dpid

These are the only army records I can find and although they are under WW1 pensions I can find no record of him serving in WW1.

Andy.

Hi Althea,

No, his records are in the WW1 pensions collection on Anc.... but there is no mention of a pension.
On discharge his intended place of residence was Charlbury but the following application was from Stow on the Wold.
