here are the census links for reference :

  Byrne siblings - 1911

  Byrne household - 1901

place of birth for the wife and children is Queen's County or Co. Laois, just Thomas was born in Co. Carlow.

The townland of Cappanamrogue, Co. Laois is located about 8km north west of Carlow town, so about 7km south of Kilmorony.

There were Gaskins in Sleaty during the early 1800s.   Its close to Shrule and Leaugh (in case you are not familiar with the area)      Margaret Gaskin married Timothy Kearns from Sleaty in February 1833.  They had several children over the next few years, and Margarets name was spelled as Gaskin, Gascon and Gask in the Graigue-cullen parish registers.   Patrick Gaskin lived beside Sleaty ancient graveyard in 1851 (co-incidentally his neighbours were Byrnes)
If Mary has given her place of birth as Queens county, These may be related to her, albeit a few generations back.

To irishrose.

Many thanks for the information - I shall certainly investigate. I am familiar with the areas of Leagh and Sleaty, I have researched much information about my family but as said before my grandmother Minnie has eluded me in terms of her birth and early existence. Do you know anything more regarding the Gaskin name in Sleaty?

Many thanks - old nick.

Hi there,
Sorry, I do not know much more than I have given you.  There is still a Gaskin family living in the area.   As I said, the name was spelled in various forms in the parish birth register, but it is the same couple.  There was a spring well,  (now  filled in unfortunately)   known as Gasks well, near the present Sleaty Road roundabout.    Do you know if your Gaskins are buried in the Sleaty or Killeshin Cemetery?

To irishrose.

They are, including my grandmother, buried at Killeshin and there are quite a few. I have this afternoon looked at Killeshin's marriage records for the Kearns/Gaskin marriage you spoke of for 1833 and can't find anything.  My family still live just outside of the town but it seems they know little more than I do about grandmother Byrne. I shall keep on though as im sure there must be a birth record for Minnie - I just havn't found it yet!

Thanks again for the help and if you think of any other avenue to explore that will be great.

Regards, old nick.

My Byrne ancestry is through Tankardstown Townland where my GGGF operated a forge at Pounds Cross.  I am unaware of any Thomas in my family but I'd get a male member of your line to do advanced YDNA testing and get the results to the Byrne DNA Project.

The hazing process to post earns a diagnosis.
