late wills, 90 2000 like
« on: Tuesday 27 March 12 09:13 BST (UK) »
Hi there

I have been given a puzzle to unravel for my mums friend.

Frank Norman Melling b. 4 Nov 1929 and d 19 Nov 1998 - Napier

Is there any way she can get hold of his will. Mother (Bobby) that is all I know will fill you in more tomorrow when mum talks to his actual daughter. this got my interest though and thought you all might feel the same.

Story - well fact really but word of mouth - " Frank is married wife dies, he remarries to bobby, (now nee or real, as yet) step daughter Rosemay X? (will hopefully get that to).  Frank dies. No will, known of. Bobby (2nd wife) has real bad alzhiemers (hope that's how you spell). Gives power of Attorney to step daughter. Mother dies - ?Daughter (Rosemary) has cremated within 24 hours ( In fact more like 12 died one cremated the next) without telling other siblings/ step siblings.

The actual siblings of Frank want to know if he had a will and where to go. Had a look in archives but saw nothing for Frank which I thought was a little strange.

will get back tomorrow to see if anyone has thoughts and hopefully with more to the mothers and Rosemary's names

any ideas while I wait??

Janine

Hi Janine,

The is only a probate if there is over a certain amount in the estate, under the amount the will can be settled by a solicitor without court approval,

Cheers Janette

Hi Janine,

A few of my relatives that died in Napier, their Wills aren't up on Archives either.  Think they are held somewhere else.

Hi Janine,

Don't be too hasty, as Treebeard told the hobbits...

Many probates held by Archives NZ remain to be indexed to appear on Archway.

I suggest you go to their home page and click on Resources and then select the Research Guide which includes probates (Identity, I think). This will tell you which office of Archives NZ holds probate registers or probate files for napier for the time period you're researching.

Knew you would come to the fore Spades :D

Just a thought, some of the folks back then used the "Public Trust" to handle their affairs.

The Research Guide is Personal Identity although Napier files, which are held at Wellington, only go to 1993.
