Many thanks. I'm in no hurry. I figured it must be about 7-8L. This guy probably left England under stress of debt. If so, I am asking myself, where did he get about 40L [to include his large family 3 mionths later] when he was just a baggage clerk for the CPR. England or Canada, 30L a year [$100-150US then] was the common wage. If the CPR didn't pay his way to immigrate to Calgary, or the Bonus was not negotiated with the agent [half back to him?], what else is left but theft as an answer.
