Divorced again?
« on: Thursday 29 March 12 09:52 BST (UK) »
My gt. Grandfather Robert Fraser born in 1857 in Glasgow but grew up in Liverpool divorced my gt. Grandmother (which is common knowledge in the family) and married someone else, namely Elizabeth Lightfoot.  However, his second wife left him in 1910 and emigrated to Canada taking their two children with her. The tale is that she did an overnight 'flit'  and took all his money with her, but I am wondering if perhaps  they got divorced .  I dont think you could just 'flit off' to Canada could you?
How would I find this out?  Has anyone any idea please?
Many thanks
Cecile

The National Archives have some divorce records upto 1930s - there's one for a Robert Fraser/Mary Ellen Fraser in 1896 listed, but that seems to be it:

Cecile - as regards the "flit" have you seen the wife & children on passenger lists, are they on the 1910 Canadian Census and not the 1911 UK one?

Hi
Yes, they are on the Canadian Census
I did find out a bit about one of the children through rootschat, the boy William Robert, but I havent found anything about the daughter - also called Elizabeth or the wife.
Thanks for your help
Cecile

Cecile, I may be looking at the wrong Robert Fraser, but I've found one who is a painter on 1901 & 1911 (& plumber in 1901). In 1911 there is a 3 year old with him who could be a son - how does that tie in with the children being in Canada?

Hello again

Yes he was a painter/plumber.

The children from his first marriage were more or less grown up, but the children from his second marriage were:

Elizabeth born 15th November 1899 in Liverpool
William Robert born 4th September 1901 in Liverpool
Charles Norman born 5th December 1903 died 1904

so I am not sure who the 3 year old would be in 1911

I haven't been able to trace Mother Elizabeth or daughter Elizabeth
Thanks for all your hard work
Best wishes
Cecile
