Redles Suffolk
« on: Thursday 29 March 12 15:10 BST (UK) »
I have someone who in 1851 gave their birth place as Redles Ham, Suffolk in 1812/13.  I have found Redles in the Hundred of Cosford in the Domesday Book but it seems to have disappeared since 1813?  I would be grateful if anyone could shed any light on where it may have been - assuming I have the correct Redles!

Could it be Rendlesham, near Woodbridge?

If I am looking at the right person, she gives Cove in 1861 and Redisham in 1871.
They are close by each other.

Thanks Sue but the 1851 census is quite clear - there is no 'n' and the 'Lam' is a separate word.  Of course that does not mean it was recorded correctly?

Thanks Heywood for the smart detective work - yes you do have the right person.  Where the Cove came from is difficult to guess but 1871 Redisham seems more probable.  Nothing in IGI so I will have to try to trace the marriage in the likely parish registers - but that's a long job for the future.

Thanks for your help & efforts

The 1871 for Susan Cowell clearly shows the parish of Redisham as her birthplace (the enumerator in 1871 has much neater writing too)  :D

I compared several pages for the 1851 to see the enumerator's handwriting style.  I would say it is definitely 'ham' not 'lam' following 'Redis'.
