I tend to agree with Linda that the name is Elissand.

Warm welcome to Rootschat Lezli  :)

Hi Lezli

Was the birth cert bought from the GRO?  If it was, I wonder if they could help if you contacted them

I had similar problems with a cert I purchased some years ago and found them very helpful.

The more I look at it, the more convinced I become that it definitely is Clissard. However, this is almost certainly a mishearing or mistranscription, as I can't find any evidence of any such surname anywhere in the available online searches.  ::)

Most likely, as suggested by others, it's either a mishearing of Clissold, or a mistranscription of Clifford -- although as it looks like a copy of a contemporary certificate, the mishearing is probably more likely.

Not that this helps, as I still can't find any likely marriages!   :(

Would it be possible to see some more of the certificate so we can compare letters. I there is a capital E, C, and lower case a somewhere on the certificate, it might help if you can post these.

If the certificate came from the GRO it is a contemporary transcription.  The original will be held by the local register office, which I think would be Tower Hamlets.  I would contact them and ask them if they would be kind enough to see if the name is clearer on the original record.
