A Sarah Manton spent time in the workhouse in Holborn and there is a corresponding death there for 1879 age 58 which seems a potential fit for her christening around 1820.

She could be the Sarah Manton, 38, in St. Luke in 1861, wife of Joseph.
Joseph may have died in Shoreditch in 1866.
Possibly it's the same Sarah lodging in Little Nelson Street in St. Luke in 1871, age 50
Monton on ancestry, Minton on Familysearch.

From the image on ancestry it is not clear, I would guess it's Manton.

Hi Alan
I did wonder if the name might be Manaton, there are some John Manatons in 1851, all in Devon and Cornwall though. But that hasn't led anywhere for Sarah, so maybe it wasn't such a good idea!

The address for Sarah, 12 Lincoln Street, Mile End, that is given on Frances's school record in October 1860, alas, the whole street is listed as missing in the 1861 census.

Hi John,

Yes I had noticed that but as you say could find it in 1861.

Thanks

Alan

Hi,

One of the "hints" that could possibly help to find Sarah is that she was born in the Weymouth area of Dorset, and following this line further there seems to be a possibility that she settled in Chelsea with John Hamilton (Mamaton to Hamilton reasonably possible?)

Ages are amiss until after John's death - however there are censuses at Chelsea for -

1881 - Sarah shown age 50 John age 53 (him born in Madras, East Indies) a Messenger.
1891  - Sarah shown as age 62 John age 23 (but census showing 63)
1901 - Sarah a widow age 84
1911 - Sarah age 95 a widow

Looking at Free BMD John seems to have died in 1891 at Chelsea age 63 and Sarah age 99 in 1914 also at Chelsea

Possibly they met as a result of Robert Gautrey's occupation who was a clerk for the East India Company and they married in 1869 after her divorce from Robert in 1860.

Any thoughts?

Alan

Hi,

It looked quite promising but this looks ominous - a fly in the ointment maybe?

John Hamilton age 42 born Madras occupation Messenger in 1871 census at Chelsea married to an Elizabeth Hamilton born Enfield Middlesex age 45 - then in 1881 he is with Sarah??

Is he leading a double life or what is going on?
