Pub opposite Bootle General Hospital
« on: Saturday 31 March 12 14:25 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to help my Grandad find the name of an old pub on derby road that he used to visit in the 50's. He claims it was nicknamed The Blue House locally and that it was opposite the old Bootle hospital. I've found the name of the pub for him before but having searched extensively again this time I've had no luck! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to rootschat ConWelsh. There are some photos of pubs here:

but not sure if the one you are looking for is included.

It's a great site nevertheless and your Grandad might be interested in looking at it.

Thank's Big G and Ruskie, I've just read a pretty large list of pubs on Derby road out to him and he remembers each one, and has a story to tell about them all but there was still no luck finding that specific pub. He's pretty convinced now that it was just The Blue's House but I haven't found any mention of a Blue House in Bootle.

From 1909 (I think) directory this is a list of pubs on Derby Road that would have been on the other side to the hospital.

#2 Derby Arms Hotel
#73 Queens Arms
# 111 Old House At Home
# 125 Irish National Club
# 135 Farmers Arms
# 203 Knowsley Arms
# 209 Grapes
# 225 Old Toll Bar (corner Miller's Bridge)

from 1938 directory -

#73, 75, 77 Derby Road Queens Arms

# 203-205 Knowsley Arms

Then the Old Toll Bar

My friends on another site are certain it was The Knowsley Arms!

I believe it was called The Knowsley Arms and was on the corner of William Henry Street before they widened the road. It was known locally as the blue house.

I was born there on 10 October 1961 as my parents, Frank & Margaret Oakes, managed it for a short time. Unfortunately that is all I know. I don't even have a photograph myself but I remember driving past it a few times.
