Bristol St Stephen 1835 marriage look up please
« on: Saturday 31 March 12 14:52 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I would be ever so grateful if someone could please have a look at this marriage for me.

Hannah ATWELL married Joseph HARSE or HEARSE on 13 May 1835 at St Stephen, Bristol.  I have this much from FamilySearch.com and a published book of Bristol marriages.

It would be helpful to know if the marriage was by Banns or Licence, the couple's marital statuses and names of witnesses.

Many thanks

Debbie

Hi Debbie,

I can confirm the details you have give are correct and that the marriage was after banns.  Both were of the parish and there is nothing to indicate they were not single at the time of marriage.

I cannot give you the witnesses so you will need someone to check them out from the register.

Hope this helps a little.

Elizabeth

Thank you so much Elizabeth  :)

Very interesting that they were married by Banns.

Joseph was married to Anne Young in 1816.  Anne appears to have been buried on 24 Apr 1835 in Badgworth, Somerset.  Doesn't leave much time for the Banns to be read does it?  :o

I have just checked on a historical calendar.

Anne HARSE was buried Friday 24 Apr 1835.  Joseph and Hannah were married on Wednesday 13 May 1835.

So there were 3 Sundays between the two:

26 April, 3 May and 10 May.

Hi Debbie,

If the dates are correct then the calling of banns was put in place before she was even buried, possibly on the day she died.

The speed of the marriage probably accounted for them going to Bristol to tie the knot.  In which case, I expect the witnesses were unknown to the couple.

Genealogy is full of surprises.

Elizabeth

I have just read your last post and with the aid of a calendar, that occurred to me but I wasn't sure if it had to be 21 days or 3 Sundays.  It is still very close though.
