MARKHAM Gertrude Mary
« on: Sunday 01 April 12 09:02 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

I am looking for any info re family of a Gertrude Mary MARKHAM.

I have a record of her birth FreeBMD Dec 1877 3a 354 Hitchen, Herts.

I have a record of her marriage FreeBMD Dec 1896 Nottingham.

However, I can find nothing re her whereabouts within the 1881/1891 census' when she was aged 4 and 14.

Before ordering a birth cert I was hoping someone may be able to help/info.

Kind regards,

Mark.

Hi Mark

I wonder if she has disappeared under a stepfather's name?  I can't find her as a Markham and not anyone remotely close as all the ages are well off.

Who did she marry in 1896 and have you got them in 1901 as it might narrow down  her birthplace a bit  :)

Thank you Ruth, that was most prompt...

She married an Allen BROWN in 1896 in Nottingham. She was lodging with an Edward Copse in 1901 BUT the wife of Edward Copse is a Mary Ann MARKHAM who I assume is the sister of Gertrude. Birthplace for Gertrude given as Hitchen, Herts in this census. Birthplace of her sister given as Eatonford, Bedfordshire but this was 18 years before Gertrudes birth in Hitchen.

The thought of a stepfather had not occurred to me, but I can find nothing for 1881/1891.

Kind regards,

Mark.

Hi Mark

Any chance, with that 18 year age gap, that Mary Ann Markham/Copse is her mother and Gertrude was born out of wedlock?

Tracking Edward and Mary from their marriage in 1878, Gertrude is not with them in 1881 and 91 though.  Might be worth looking at Mary Ann and see if her parents or siblings have got Gertrude.

Yes, it appears that Edward and Mary were already in Nottingham in 1891 census, with Gertrude there in 1901. Nothing for Gertrude from birth 1876 to 1901 census.

I will play around with the freeBMD for any Gertrudes born near Hitchen c 1876 and see what surnames come up.

Her marriage cert may make interesting reading BUT may tell me nothing re father.

Regards,

Mark.

Sorry Ruth,

No point in doing that as I already have her birth reg.

She could be the daughter of Mary Ann as Edward and Mary Ann married in 1878 a year after Gertrude's birth.

IF she was born out of wedlock I assume that she would have taken the surname of her mother?

Regards,

Mark.

I would have thought she would have been registered under Markham as opposed to the father

Possibly a total red herring, but can you see a birth registration for Edward and Mary Ann's daughter Kate M (born c1877)?  I haven't found one for either MARKHAM or COPSE (any spelling) and wondered whether it could be the same person as Gertrude Mary, although the name change is odd to say the least..  ???

I think that's a possibility you know.  Maybe she was just called Kate as pet name by her parents.
And it's prettier than Gert (no offence to any Gerts out there)
