Yes, I agree. It is rather strange.

I thought that I had located Gertrude's birth record on FreeBMD Dec 1877 Hitchin 3a 354. She is listed as Gertrude Mary MARKHAM.

On the marriage record for Edward and Mary Ann the name is spelt COPPS. I have found their other daughter, Charlotte COPS, freeBMD sept 1879 for Hitchin.

Nothing for Kate.  So if she was recorded as Gertrude Mary MARKHAM it would be a bit strange to become Katie M COPPS, wouldn't it ?  ..........the plot thickens !!!!!!!!!!

By the way there is an entry for a Gertrude COPPS for June 1882.................

I have now received a copy of Gertrude's marrige cert to Allen Brown St Paul's church, Hyson Green, Nottingham Dec 19th 1896.

Her age is given as 27.

They are both residing at 53 Bateman St at the time of the marriage and Gertrude's father is given as........William Markham - deceased 

One of the witnesses is Charlotte Copse.

I' m totally lost now.............. Is Mary Ann her aunt, sister or mother?

On FreeREG i have found a Mary Ann Markham bap 7 Oct 1858 at Eaton Socon.

Her father is given as William Markham and mother as Mary.

So, perhaps Mary Ann and Gertrude were sisters afterall ?

Also, a marriage of a William Markham to a Mary Searl same reg'n district as the birth of Mary Ann, FreeBMD Dec 1856 3b 679.

I want to ask the opinion of the 'seasoned campaigners'.

Do you think I should still order the birth cert for Gertrude Markham given that she has stated that William is her father on her marriage cert?

It's just that she is with her 'sister' Mary Ann and Mary Ann has a daughter 'Kate', the same age as Gertrude, in the census and I can find no record of Kate's birth, only Charlotte's.

Perhaps the birth cert of Gertrude would reveal something different? ie that her parents are Mary Ann and someone else, perhaps Edward Copps/Unknown as opposed to William and Mary Markham? Or should I just accept that William/Mary are her parents and proceed to the next generation?
