'Cal' Jones, Walsall, Staffordshire
« on: Monday 02 April 12 12:31 BST (UK) »
Does anybody know of a 'Cal' Jones, possibly born 1913 near Walsall, Staffordshire.  I don't think Cal was his real name, but was a well-used nickname which was included on his death certificate in 1995.  'Cal' had at least one brother John Thomas Jones; parents likely to be William and Martha Ann.

The only thing I can think of , is that Cal could be short for Caleb. Quite a few born in Wales 1910-16 - info from FreeBMD.

Thanks. Anecdotal evidence suggests it was short for Calthorpe, but I can't find anyone with this name in BMD. I think he had a very different first name but was known as Cal by his family and friends. Whoever registered his death in '95 did so as Cal.

Mother's maiden name was Parton. I've checked BMD again but still can't find anything close.  ???

According to the 1995 death registration, "Cal" Jones was born on 17 May 1913.

If his mother's maiden name was Parton, this is the only male birth possible:

William E JONES  (mmn PARTON) - Jun Q 1913, Dudley 6b 1978

As you suggest, it looks as though the nickname had no link to his "real" name.   ???

Did Cal marry?  If so, the marriage registration might be helpful.

Yes, WILLIAM E JONES is as far as I got too, but cannot work out how you get CAL from that!!  I think my only hope is to find someone who actually knew him.

We're not sure if he married.......possibly not as no one remembers a wife. I'll double check in BMD though.
