James LATTER born c1852-COMPLETED
« on: Wednesday 04 April 12 14:25 BST (UK) »
Hi, l wonder if anyone on the list could possibly look at the following and give me there opinion?

James latter my 2nd GGrandfather was born c1852 and he married my 2nd GGrandmother Rhoda Penticost in October 1875 at Uckfield, l have this family on the 1881 census together with there 3 children living in Fletching, Sussex.

I had always presumed that James had died in 1888 and it was only through another post on this board that l realised that he was still alive in 1911? still living with his wife and son George, however this is where it all goes fuzzy? on the 1911 census it states that they only had 1 child?
This led me to dig a little further and l tried to find a birth record for James but l cannot find one that fits? according to 1881 & 1911 census he was born in Crowborough, Sussex between 1852 & 1855?
I then tried to find James on the 1861 census but to no avail?( l had been told by a distant relative some years ago that james was the son of Thomas & Eliza nee Burnidge), l cannot find him on the 1891 census.
The puzzling thing is the lack of a birth record, there are several entries on bmd but none in Sussex?
I suppose the sensible thing to do would be to obtain the marriage cert to ascertain the name of James father? but l would be glad of any comments.

Best wishes
Robert

Hello Robert.....

I think this could be your family, on the 1891 census......

WILLIAM CATT / head / age 35 / AgLab / born HASTINGS
Rhoda Catt / wife / age 35 / born Uckfield
James Catt / son / age 14 / Ag Lab / born Uckfield
Amy/Annie Catt / daughter / age 13 / born Uckfield
Elizabeth Catt / daughter / age 12 / born Uckfield

Old Mill Barn / Cranesden / Mayfield

The names and ages all fit . Perhaps a terrible hearing problem for the enumerator ?

Hi JeannieR,

Thanks so much for looking at this for me, it is very kind off you.

Not sure about this family, l can understand the enumerator getting the surname wrong but mishearing James with William? However all the other names fit so it certainly is worth bearing in mind, can you see this family on the 1881 or 1901 census? my apologies if l'm asking to much of your time?

Best wishes and thanks again

Robert....

I cannot find any sign of the "Catt" family in any other census.

Like you, prior to the 1881 census, I cannot find James Latter, I have, however found a JAMES CATT, born c1855, resident in the Union Workhouse , Hastings on the 1861 census

Birth Registration
James Catt / Hastings / Dec qtr 1855 / vol 2b page 12

The only other thing that I can think, is that it was your James who died in 1888, and that Rhoda then became linked to Mr Catt ? I can find no marriage though......

You mention that you had found them in 1911, living with son George ? Where and when was George born ?

Hi again JeannieR, thanks for your continued help with this :)

According to 1911 census George was born c1883 Hawkhurst, Kent, his father James states his age as 55 and born Crowborough, Sussex.

Could it be a simple misunderstanding of the instructions for 1911 and only George is still living with them so they ignored the other children?

Hi again JeannieR,

Thanks for the info, it looks like James is something of an enigma? seeing as he can't be found on any census before 1881 and the lack of any birth registration is puzzling ???
It also looks as if he is not the son of Thomas & Eliza as it seems strange that he would not be with family in 1861 as he would have only been 7 or 8 at this time? thing is "where is he?"

Back to the drawing board with this one l think.

Sincere thanks for all of your help and advice with this JeannieR.

Best wishes
