Mary Tomlin, born 1840, mother of Alma, born 1860.

Alma Tomlin was born to single mother Mary in Whitechapel. He is in the 1861 census as a "nursechild" with a family in Hemel Hempstead. I can trace his history but can find nothing further of his mother and what happened to her.
Regards

Hi

His baptism at St Andrew Holborn gives address as West London Union (Workhouse).  Trying the workhouse on the 1861 census might give some clues to see if she is still there even though Alma is in Hemel or if West London Union records are held anywhere it may give some more information.   Its on RG 9 217, folios 38 - 98 (in fact, will go and have a look now... ;D

edited :  doesnt look like she is there

(In case you don't have it, his date of birth is given as 2nd July 1860, christened on 24th July 1860)

Alma is a very unusual christian name for a male - I wonder if he was named after a relative of Mary's

Any clues on his marriage certificate, was there a Mary? witness, did it give his fathers name?

What makes you say he was born in Whitechapel?
