DAVID RICHARDSON b. circ. 1819
« on: Tuesday 17 May 05 18:31 BST (UK) »
David Richardson was b. abt. 1815-19 in England (where in England, I know not!), according to the 1850 and 1860 Texas censuses.  He and his family, including wife Eliza (b. Isle of Man), emigrated to Galveston, TX in 1848.  The 1850 census indicates he was employed with the Galveston Daily Newspaper.  He and Eliza divorced and David remarried mid 1850s to "Jennie" from Scotland.  David died in 1871 in New York.

If anyone recognizes this gentleman and can offer suggestions as to how to locate his exact date and place of birth, I would be most appreciative.

What were the names and ages of their children in the 1850 census? It might reduce the size of the haystack we're looking for the needle in!

I can't find them in the obvious places. It may be a case of waiting until the 1841 is indexed by Ancestry.com, which I gather may be later this year, and seeing if you can find them on that.

Sorry!

Many thanks for your efforts, David.  David and family arrived in the US circ. 1848, so the 1841 US census will not help.  He is not listed on the 1841 IOM census.  (Does anyone have access to the 1841 England/UK census?)
Regards,
Pat

Until Ancestry or one of the other pay per view companies produces a national index of the UK 1841 you're a bit stuck, as the census is released on a county by county basis with most of them not indexed. Unless you know which county he was in it really is like looking for a needle in a haystack. There are no baptisms on the IGI that match.

The only thing that occurs to me is to run a search on http://www.freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl or use the pay per view www.1837online.com for each of the children, print off the results and see if there is a common denominator. FreeBMD is not yet completely transcribed though. A quick test run seems to throw up Marylebone fairly often. That's the only way I can think of to narrow it down, at least until Ancestry  releases their countrywide index for 1841 - which I read is scheduled for later this year.

I checked the freeBMD site again, however, Births do not include parents' names and Marriages don't include spouses.  As well, I tried to cross-reference Vol. nos. in marriages, but came up short.  (Only 2 of the children were born in the UK, so matching up siblings was not practical).

I guess I'll have to finally give in and pay for some searches on 1837.online; but might prove costly when I don't know which area I'm looking for.

Perhaps when Ancestry distributes the 1841 online, I'll have some luck, although my understanding is that the 1841 does not provide much info (ie relationships)?

Frustration lies in the fact that David Richardson was a rather prominent newspaper owner/publisher/editor of the Galveston Daily News, which lasted from his entry into the States in 1848 until his death in New York in 1871.  ALL my searches with the appropriate US agencies, & including the newspaper itself, has produced nothing.  I even purchased a book which includes several entries referencing David, but NO date/place of birth anywhere!  The closest I've come is the Handbook of Texas online which gave me my original info (ie birth "about 1815-19 England".  Oh well......

Again, my thanks David - much appreciated.
