Dad's army records
« on: Thursday 05 April 12 08:52 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone
Just tidying up some information on my grandad. He was in the home guard during the second world war as he had a reserve occupation as a miner. Are any records available for me to find out about his service? If so are they available to view yet and where are they kept? He served in East Kent.
Many thanks in advance for your help

Hi,

The records as far as I know are not online but my dad sent for a copy of his.

TNT Archive Service, Tetron Point, William Nadin Way, Swadlincote, Derbyshire, DE11 0BB

I think he had to wait several months for them, but that was a few years ago.

Thanks nanny jan I will email them after the Easter break and see what help they can give me. I have his early life documented and its just the war years that I have a gap in his life story so it would be good to be able to add some information.

Records are available only from Glasgow and none are online. You would not be able to get the records of a living person ande you would need to declare a relationship.

Details are at:
http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/army.html

However those are for enlisted service people. Home guard records were much less formal and may not be accessible at all.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

My dad was in the Home Guard and sent for his records in 2007 (address given in my earlier posting). Took a few months for them to arrive;  just a couple of pages but brought back lots of memories for him.   :)
