Hi, i am new to this site so please excuse me if i make any mistakes,

i would like some help or advice in trying to find my grandad, i have been searching for a long time now but seem to find not much about him.

john thomas harper otherwise known as jack
rear gunner on a lancaster bomber raf
trained in cornwall but this is not actually known
born and bread in birmingham west midlands uk

my grandad never talked of the war so we dont know much about his time in the raf, so any help would be hugely appreciated, many thanks

Unless you can get a squadron number, this will take time. You can get his service record, though the delay is up to a year at present, see http://www.rootschat.com/links/09es/  at Veterans UK.

Once you have the squadron number, merely searching online for the squadron will give you lots of information: there are loads of aviation enthusiasts out there who have vast knowledge.

Also you can then go to the National Archives website to search for squadron records, some of which are available to download, there is guidance here: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-subject/raf-squadron.htm

Good hunting!
