John Bartlett - missionary
« on: Sunday 08 April 12 11:05 BST (UK) »
My ancestor, John Bartlett was born in Hampshire in 1788 then in 1811 was sent to South Africa by the London Mission Society.  He married Johanna Goeyeman in 1815 and then Susanna Haarhof in 1830.  Need to know who his parents and siblings were.

Hi

Are you able to be more specific about his birth place, other than just Hampshire?  There are a number of potential candidates but from wide area.  There are a couple of baptisms in 1788 itself, one in Portsea and the other in Dibden.  Another in 1787 in Bramley.  There are others but the dates are a little more outside the possible timeframe.  It depends if his age was accurate in the infomration you have.

Hi Nell
I believe the year 1788 is correct as it was given to me by a researcher on a South African website.  They also only stated birthplace as Hampshire.  On the family tree of another person searching Bartlett, they have stated his birthplace as Portsea, but I never just take for granted that they have done the proper research.
Thanks Marilyn

This is the Portsea baptism, but I would urge caution - check out everything you can before you accept that this is the right person.

John Bartlett, son of Richard & Sarah Bartlett, bapt 22 Jan 1788, St Mary, Portsea.

Possibly siblings (not allowing for spelling variants or that I might have missed some):
Henry Richard bp 9 Feb 1783 St Mary Portsea
Richard bp 30 Apr 1784 St Mary Portsea
Robert 13 Dec 1789 St John Portsea
Richard 31 Dec 1793 St John Portsea
Elizabeth bp 16 Aug 1795  St John Portsea

I also have some knowledge about  rev. John and it would be intresting for me to find out how we are related.

I can give you the whole family line of every generation as i have it with me.
I am 99.99% sure that John's first wife was not caucasian
