29 Caversham Road, Reading
« on: Sunday 08 April 12 17:01 BST (UK) »
Hi

We have just found out that our house in Reading is a grade 2 listed building, and now what to find out some information about it?

Who lived in it etc?

Any ideas - thought census would help, but you cannot seem to search by address.

Any help would be great

Cheers

Hi

You can search all censuses by address on FindMyPast but their T & C's do not allow publication of info

Here's the link to the site but you would need to buy credits to view any entries

link to "Historical Directories". Searching "Berkshire" for "29 Caversham Road" should return several results

As you live within a mile or so of the Berkshire Record Office and Reading Library you won't have far to go to find out about past residents.  The Local Studies Library (top floor of the main library in King's Road) is probably your best bet.  They have a great collection of local directories and (IIRC) electoral rolls - which will probably take you back to when your house was built in terms of residents.

English Heritage in Swindon may have a file on your house - but don't count on it, the listing process was pretty superficial in most cases.  Worth asking though.

As for censuses - it is easy enough to find an address. In larger towns and cities there are indexes showing where particular streets can be found in the enumerator's books.  I'm sure I've seen these online at some time - otherwise the library will have them for Reading.

Found a couple:
Here is one index (1871) http://yourarchives.nationalarchives.gov.uk/index.php?title=Place:Reading_Registration_District,_1871_Census_Street_Index_C-F
and 1891
http://yourarchives.nationalarchives.gov.uk/index.php?title=Place:Reading_Registration_District,_1891_Census_Street_Index_C-F

If you don't have online access to censuses the library has 1841-1901 on film/fiche and, probably, an Ancestry subscription.

You'll probably find yourself on this site: http://www.imagesofengland.org.uk/

It's a great resource for finding interesting buildings - I found my 9-g-gradfather's house on it!
