Mary GUNN - 1851 census
« on: Wednesday 11 April 12 12:04 BST (UK) »
Hi all...

Extremely new to Canadian research so please bear with me :-)

Mary GUNN appeared on the 1851 Census with her parents Donald and Elizabeth (Betsy) and her siblings but in the 1861 Census she is no longer listed.

Is there any way of finding out if she married, died or migrated in the intervening years.

----

1851 Census of Canada

GUNN family farming in Sydenham, Grey County, Ontario

http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/databases/census-1851/001005-100.01-e.php
District Number: 11
Sub-district Number: 98
Schedule: A

Submit. Then choose "Associated Images - (45) (46) (47)" which cover page 23a to 23d

----

1861 Census of Canada

Mary GUNN is no longer listed (death/marriage/migration?)
The rest of the GUNN family are still listed.

"Donal Gun" = Donald GUNN
"Elizeth Medonel Gun" = Elizabeth McDONALD GUNN
"Eselbar Gun" = Isabella GUNN...etc

Family Search - 1861 Census
http://www.rootschat.com/links/0l51/

Last Names = Gun
Residence = Holland, Grey, Ontario, Canada

----

If it's of any help I have a rough background for Mary in the following thread...

I can't see a marriage for Mary Gunn but she most likely married Neil McKay in the late 1850s.
On the 1861 census for Sydenham, Grey County Neil McKay and wife Mary (23) both born Scotland are found with child Jessy age 3 b. Ontario.

The 1881 census for Sydenham Grey shows Neil and wife Mary and children Robert, William Alexander, James, John, Betsey, Mary Ann, Mary Jane.

Marriage of Robert McKay in 1889 to Ellen Taylor shows his birth in 1863 Sydenham Township with parents Neil McKay and Mary Gunn.

Birth of Christina Bella McKay 12 Mar 1882 Sydenham, Grey with parents Mary Gun and Neil McKay.

Hi Clodrode,

You may want to contact the local libraries to ask for a marriage note for her. Sorry I dont recall which one would be the closest. Similarly, you may want to do same with local genealogy group. I think Grey county has a chapter of the OGS. Hope that helps.

Hi all...

Thanks very much for finding Mary GUNN.

Seems like she's not the Mary I'm looking for but it's nice to know her story.

All the best
Beg

Ack, you are looking for a Mary Gunn who went to N.Z. ?? This seems like a roundabout bogus way to get information...

Hello J.J

My apologies if you've taken offence at my asking for help. It was not a roundabout bogus way of getting information.

I have a list of Mary GUNN's born roughly the same year in roughly the same locale. Hopefully one of them migrated to NZ. I'm trying to trace and eliminate them one by one.

One of the Mary's migrated to Canada. I simply asked for help in tracing her, which I greatfully received from the Canada board. Rootschatters achieved overnight what would have taken me at least a week of fumbling around.

Once again, apologies if you've taken offence. None was given.

Out of interest, what does "ack" mean.

Beg

It's just a noise, like egads... :P I don't know that it's our duty to eliminate all the similar names people may find.
