Please date this beloved photo

This is Ethel (Effie) Garland my Great Grandmother and I love this photo. She was born Sept 1889 in Hull and died in 1965.

I'm sorry I have no details of anything on the reverse as this was sent to me digitally. I think the edges of the photo can just be seen and it is not stuck on any card or mounted in any way and there are no company marks on the front. There are two different copies of the same photo attached.

Her skin tone looks so dark it could almost be Asian in the photo when actually it was white as I have seen in later pictures. I'm at a loss as to the date due to her costume and the style of portrait - both seem unusual to me for 1910-1920, although by her age it must be sometime around this period.

I was wondering whether anyone might put a more specific date to it for me please. Many thanks for your help.
Lucy

Hi Lucy

I've seen quite a few photographs of women wearing blouses with that neckline 1915-1918 ish.

This could be just pre - just post WW1.The interesting thing about this is her r/h index finger is extended, this is quite common with married women posing like this with their l/h index finger extended which draws the viewers attention to the fact she's married.I don't think she's married but could possibly be engaged.Just a thought.

Marriage reg for her in  Sculcoates June q, 1920 - to Joseph Wiles. This fits with a death in Hull, 1965 of an Ethel Wiles, aged 76.

I wonder if it was a photo for Joseph to take to the front?

She looks younger than 30 - maybe in her  mid 20s.

I thought the same thing about the 2 photos, one for him & one for her.
The marriage looks right as there's a 1922 birth for a Wiles with mother Garland.
Seems to have had a quiet war according to his records.
