Garonne 1880 Passenger List
« on: Thursday 12 April 12 15:34 BST (UK) »
Howdy,
Jonathan Henry Garonne Pearson was born on the 8th Sep 1880 on the ship Garonne ( hence the name) on a trip from Australia back to England. Family legend has it this was at the Red Sea opposite Mecca.

Don't seem to be able to find any passenger lists at all for this. Other than a birth cert, was wondering if there was anything like a passenger list or a ships log which might give a bit more detail on this.

thanks

If you look at the Australian newspapers, they published regular updates on where ships were.

e.g. http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/13467985?searchTerm=Garonne shows that the Garonne left Melbourne on August 10th and arrived at Suez on the 13th September.  So it is likely that she was in the Red Sea when Jonathan was born.

You couldn't actually be opposite Mecca if you were on a ship, as Mecca is inland. However, the seaside city is Jeddah. So, maybe the family legend simply meant Saudi, of which Mecca is the most widely known.
