Bristol marriage
« on: Thursday 12 April 12 16:34 BST (UK) »
Greetings, first post from a lurker :-}
On the Ancestry UK site I have found a marriage in the Gloucestershire Extracted Parish Records collection,
specifically: Gloucestershire: Bristol - Register of Marriages, 1800-1837.
I won't quote directly as I'm uncertain about copyright - perhaps someone can enlighten me.

The text states 'John Gouldsmith & Ann Elizabeth West  botp Banns'.
I understand botp to mean both of this parish. But which parish?
Any clues welcome.

Cheers, Alan

Hello and a very warm welcome to Rootschat  ;D  basically it means ' that they (bride and groom)  were both of the parish  when the banns were read and when they were married' unfortunately this is not much of a clue as to where either of the parties to the marriage may have come from originally.

It was more often than not, that the parties married in the home-parish of the bride;  although there are of course various scenarios - they both lived and came from the parish they were married in; one of the party lived and came from the parish and the other moved there from elsewhere; neither originally came from the parish but had moved to the area and were 'of this parish' at the time of the their  marriage.

Kind Regards

Angie

Hi Angie.
Thanks for the almost immediate response :-}
What I was getting at is - which of the many Bristol parishes is meant?
I have found a baptism for the groom in St. Augustine-the-Less, but can't find the marriage in that parish.
Cheers, Alan

Hi Angie.
No need to apologise at all :-}
I think I may have phrased my question badly - what I'm wondering is, is there a 'default' parish
in Bristol, i.e a 'senior' parish that would be assumed if someone said 'botp' in the context of Bristol.
Cheers, Alan

Ahh but I have found baptism's for their daughter Emma  on familysearch.org  at the Church of the Holy Apostles, Bristol, Gloucestershire

https://www.familysearch.org/search/records/index#count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3AAnn~%20%2Bsurname%3AWest~%20%2Bmarriage_place%3ABristol~%20%2Bmarriage_year%3A1800-1837~%20%2Bspouse_givenname%3AJohn~%20%2Bspouse_surname%3AGouldsmith~

Which may help with another area to look at..

Hi Angie.
Yes, I have that one plus half a dozen other offspring in a couple of other parishes.
Can't find the marriage though :-{
The Ancestry marriage ref. I initially referred to is odd, in that the Book claims to be 'Burialls 1604'.
I was hoping to track down the marriage on FamilySearch via the batch numbers on the Hugh Wallis' site.
Cheers, Alan

Yes. I couldn't find the marriage either. I looked on both  familysearch  & Freereg but no joy.  I have had a quick look at the non-confirmist registers that I do have access to but nothing so far.
A side-track but maybe something to work with in trying to establish the couples marriage.. a look at the wider family.. maybe ?

Still no further forward....   :-\  Looks like Ann may be a widow by 1851 employed as a nurse aged 51 ? birthplace given as Clifton Bristol.  Whilst they seem to be an interesting family Alan I'm afraid that really hasn't helped find the marriage for them - sorry - which is really a bit odd.  Does it give a date at all? anything other than Gloucestershire 1800-1837 ? how strange - eh
