"Fernleigh" Monkstown...where was it? *COMPLETED**
« on: Saturday 14 April 12 01:22 BST (UK) »
Mary O'Brien noted "Fernleigh" Monkstown as her address where she lived as a domestic servant prior to her marriage to James Byrne in 1927.
Any locals able to guide me as to where it was?  Have asked some people who work/live in that area and I haven't come up with a definitive answer.  Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

not sure if this is the same Fernleigh, but it's the closest I can find... it's a house in Glenageary located just over 3km from the centre of Monkstown.

See : Fernleigh, Glenageary Rd. Upper   (c1890 OSI Map)

In Thom's 1927 the householder is listed as a Mrs Macready.

Thanks Shane.  This is great...I hadn't tried Thoms for this info but it's quite possible that this is the one.  Anecdotal info says that Mary O'Brien worked for a senior Bank Managers family so now all I gotta do is wait for the 1926 census release to confirm if this is the right one!!! Any other way you could suggest to confirm any of this?

I had a closer look at the location - that side of the road is in the townland of Glenagarey (aka Glenageary) and the other side is Monkstown townland, and both are in the civil parish of Monkstown.

The householder was a widow named Emilie Macready and she seems to have lived there until she died in 1933. Her husband Medrum died in 1903 and was 'Secretary to Steam Packet Company'.

Both the census returns show a live-in servant in the household.

First post and reply to an old thread for which I ask to be forgiven. Fernleigh was / is on The Hill, Monkstown, Co. Dublin and is a semi detached house next to Belmont. It's name has been changed to Ard Sonais per google maps. If you copy and paste  http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,723480,728537,7,9 into your browser the historic 25" map opens and the house is under the red centre cross.

Thanks Bluezulu49 and welcome to Rootschat! That house looks like it fits in more with what my aunt remembers as a child.
