hiya siouxzie,he may have been a warder in a military prison,the sudan war has already been mentioned,there was also the ashanti war,but that was mainly the west yorkshire regt,then there was the battle of omdurman plus a few other small conflicts around the world,she may not have been a widow,it was common for women who had been deserted to say that hubby was dead,so they could remarry,ive come across a few in the military and navy,at least you have his disappearance narrowed down between 1886 and 1891,mack
